What is Hijamah?

Hijama is wet cupping. It’s derived from the word “Hajm”, which means sucking. Hijama involves performing small incisions on specific points on the body (depending on the condition and location of pain) and placing suction cups on these areas to draw out toxic blood. It is the oldest, most frequently used and often the most effective method of cupping.

What is the difference between Hijamah and donating blood?

Donating blood is often confused with Hijama yet the two are very different in their method and their effect on the body. When you donate blood, the blood is removed directly from your veins. However, Hijama is removing blood that is underneath your skin and within your muscles.

The word "hijama" is derived from an arabic word "hajm" which means "sucking." Cupping is the process of applying cups to various sunnah points on the body by removing the air inside the cups to form a vacuum. A Remedy encouraged and prescribed by the Muhammad sallallaahu alayhi Wasallam who said, "Indeed the best of remedies that you have is cupping ..." (Sahih Bukhari).

Cupping therapy uses suction to bring out toxic blood, phlegm to the surface of the body, then the immune system discharges the waste naturally in the days that follow. It is one of the best technique which heals many internal conditions, chronic diseases and musculoskeletal pains. It helps in prevention of diseases and strengthening of immune system.

Why Cupping Therapy?

Cupping activates the dormant immune system which helps the body to heal itself. Cupping Therapy help in detoxification of blood which helps remove pain. Treatments through allopathic medicines, homeopathy, and physiotherapy often have side effects or some times they are ineffective on certain individuals. Hijama Cupping therapy offers an effective and immediate treatment for patients suffering with pain, chronic and other conditions too.

For certain problems, A single session can provide a long lasting cure for severe health issues, regular cupping helps strengthens the immune system which in turn helps in self healing of diseases.

Cupping causes the release of endorphins in the body (natural painkillers) and other hormones such as serotonin which helps the body self heal and prevent itself from diseases.

What is Hijamah Beneficial more?

Hijama therapy is a very beneficial treatment and can assist with a wide range of health conditions. Some of these conditions include:

  • Inflammation

  • Digestive health

  • Menstrual health

  • Infertility

  • Prostate problems and hormonal dysfunction

  • Insomnia

  • Chronic fatigue

Who cannot perform Hijamah?

If you are taking blood-thinning medications such as aspirin or warfarin etc, then you cannot perform Hijama as the incision site will not close properly, hence increasing your risk of infection. Please see your doctor and they will advise if you are allowed to stop taking your blood-thinning medications for a short period in order to perform Hijama or if you cannot. We will need a referral from your doctor under this circumstance.

It is also not recommended for someone with a terminal illness.

How Many cups will they apply?  

Your therapist will first assess and determine the purpose of the cupping treatment (e.g. for a general detox or knee or low back pain, etc.). The number of cups will depend on the size of your body and the location. We generally apply 9-11 cups for men and 5-9 cups for women.

Does Cupping work?

Quite simply yes! As the main form of treatment in the East for thousands of years, it could not have continued for so long if it did not work.

There are many evidence’s that demonstrates that effectiveness of Cupping in treating certain conditions such as back pain, knee pain, asthma, sinusitis, the list goes on. We highly recommend for you to ask the people who have had their cupping or try cupping to feel the immediate results it has on the body.

Does cupping hurt?

The blades used for cupping are much finer than those normally used and are not painful. The sensation felt while cupping is done is often described as a sharp scratch around the area where its done. Many Patients often report feeling relaxed or invigorated during and after the cupping treatment. Cupping is not a painful or unpleasant experience.

How long does it take for each cupping session?

The assessment which is carried out will normally be for around an hour as patient's full medical history is taken which includes all aspects of his/her health. We make sure that only a safe amount of blood is removed in each session. The subsequent sessions will be shorter.

How many sessions does one need to get healed?

It differs from person to person as each one of them have a unique disease to be healed. After each session you will be able to notice many improvements, for chronic conditions such as asthma you may need cupping once for a few months and then less often.

How often should I do hijama?

It is totally up to you, some do it every month as a preventative medicine in the sunnah days, which is 17th, 19th and the 21st of the Islamic lunar calender. Others do it after 3 months or 6 months or even after a year. Hijama is a detoxification therapy, there are other detox programs that people follow for example, they may start to have more fruits and vegetables, antioxidant drinks, cut down on fatty unhealthy foods and so on.

Can I do Hijamah if I am fasting?

Islamically, there is a difference of opinion on this matter, and one should take the opinion they follow. 

However, we advise our clients NOT to perform Hijama while fasting because if they were to feel like they’re going to faint, we would immediately provide them with water and honey, which will break their fast.

Can I do Hijamah outside recommended dates?

Yes, you can! If you are performing hijama to treat a specific condition, e.g. low back pain or arthritic pain, etc, ,then you can perform Hijama anytime. However, if you are performing Hijama because Prophet Muhammad (SAW) highly recommended it and you want a general detox for your body, then we suggest you book in on the recommended dates for the month.
